Failed Offshore Crane Boom, Emergency Make-Safe and Dismantling

After an offshore crane boom snapped at its base, DSL designed temporary supports and a portable lifting device from scratch, then safely secured and dismantled the 136 ft boom without any supporting crane.

A system failure on an offshore crane allowed the boom to rise too far, snapping it at the base. The 136 ft boom was left leaning against its support structure and partly penetrating the deck, with damaged and unstable adjoining accessories and a 2 tonne block and hook hanging unsecured.

There were no existing calculations to develop a solution from, no established procedures for the situation and no crane available to assist with removal. Before anyone could even get onto the structure to evaluate dismantling options, it had to be made stable and safe.
