Offshore Platform Derrick Removal Using a Floating Pole

For a long-term platform operator client, DSL removed a drilling derrick and drill floor equipment using its floating pole methodology, avoiding the need for a costly heavy lift vessel.

The platform operator is a long-term DSL client for asset integrity and drilling structure work. Its projects team needed the drilling structure removed and turned to DSL because of our track record in removing drilling structures with the floating pole methodology rather than costly heavy lift vessels.

A comprehensive engineering analysis was needed to ensure, and prove, that structural integrity was maintained throughout dismantling. The platform flare was in close proximity to the drilling structure, and weather meant enough fall-back work had to be planned to keep crews productive during work at height downtime.

Our team installed dedicated tuggers on the drill floor and used them to remove the derrick ancillary equipment. A floating pole was then assembled and installed inside the derrick and load tested before being used to remove the gin pole.

The derrick sections were removed using the floating pole assembly from the gin pole down to level 5, at the top of the derrick V-doors. The floating pole was then removed and disassembled, the remaining derrick stem from level 5 to the drill floor was lifted out with the platform crane, and all drilling equipment was cleared from the drill floor.
